Irving M. Shapiro, BDS, PhD

In the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, the Division of Orthopaedic Research brings together clinical need with basic science discoveries to address problems surgeons face when treating patients. Our scientists are involved in a wide range of laboratory studies that address nearly every aspect of orthopaedics, from the very basic molecular biology of disease to preventing genetic malformations.

Philanthropy plays a vital role in our research mission because it enables us to obtain equipment for state-of-the-art research; it allows us to recruit the best and brightest researchers; and it is critical for educating and training young investigators who hope to establish promising careers in orthopaedics.

The quality of our researchers, their ability to take on very difficult projects in a creative manner and the importance of the topics they’re investigating makes us a standout division, among the best in the world.
