In Memoriam: Former Jefferson College of Biomedical Sciences Dean, Dr. Jussi J. Saukkonen, 1930-2014
This week we learned, with sadness, of the death of former Jefferson College of Biomedical Sciences Dean, Dr. Jussi Jaakko Saukkonen. Dr. Saukkonen served as Dean of the then-named College of Graduate Studies from 1981 to 2003, and also served as University Vice President for Science Policy, Technology Development and International Affairs during this time. He traveled extensively for Jefferson, helping to build many international collaborations, and was the founder of the technology transfer program at Jefferson. Dr. Saukkonen, who was among the longest serving graduate deans at any institution, joined Jefferson in 1969 as an Associate Professor of Microbiology, and in 1972 he was appointed to Professor of Microbiology, a position he held until 2006. He served as teacher and mentor to many Ph.D. and M.S. graduate students, and also had a significant role in educating medical students. Dr. Saukkonen was instrumental in revamping the medical college curriculum, and served as Chairman of the Medical School Curriculum Committee for many years.
