There is a movement in health care that recognizes that much of what makes and keeps people healthy happens beyond the traditional clinical encounter. To make the move to a system that rewards outcomes rather than volume, clinicians must learn how to do more with the health data they have, as well as incorporate other disparate, but relevant, sources of information. True population health improvement will be driven by insights derived and distilled from vast amounts of heterogeneous and distinct data that are no longer limited to the physician office or hospital medical records.
The Jefferson College of Population Health's (JCPH) Graduate Certificate in Population Health Intelligence and the Master of Science in Population Health Intelligence (MS-PHI) prepare graduates to collect, organize, harmonize, analyze, disseminate and act upon the data available to clinicians, health system leaders, the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry, and healthcare payers. The mantra of population health intelligence is turning data into insights and action.
Graduates of the Graduate Certificate in Population Health Intelligence are able to:
- Identify and respond to socio-economic, environmental and behavioral determinants of health.
- Assess a health system's hardware and software to determine its security compliance and conformance with purchasing requirements.
- Develop a strategy for identifying and integrating disparate, non-health and population-level data into clinical decision-making.
- Identify and qualify sources of population health data.
- Apply principles of effective and ethical data governance.
- Account for the impact of health law and regulations on the collection, aggregation, analysis and presentation of data.
Graduates of the MS-PHI degree are able to achieve the above competencies plus:
- Evaluate questions of efficiency and effectiveness in health care employing an array of quantitative methods used by health analytics practitioners.
- Apply management and leadership skills to data-driven decision-making.
- Develop a strategy for analyzing and accessing payer contracts for at-risk populations.
- Adopt data visualization techniques that contribute to effective presentations and population health management dashboards.
- Assess population health initiatives employing program implementation and evaluation techniques.
- Apply epidemiological research methods to identify factors affecting patient care and health outcomes.
The population health intelligence program is designed for candidates who have a strong foundation and at least two years of experience in one or more key sectors of the healthcare or public health system. This program is not designed for recent college graduates. Proficiency with medical terminology is highly recommended. Candidates for the population health intelligence program include:
- Health professionals seeking additional skills in data analytics or looking to use data-driven, actionable evidence for health outcomes improvement

The Graduate Certificate in Population Health Intelligence requires completion of 18 credits or 6 courses, all of which can be applied to the MS-PHI.
The MS-PHI requires completion of 39 credits or 12 courses and a Capstone Project that is presented on campus to peers and faculty following completion of coursework.
- Two or more years of experience in an appropriate health or healthcare setting
- Earned baccalaureate with an approximate GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Ability to perform graduate work demonstrated by one of the following:
- Graduate degree or at least 9 credits of appropriate graduate coursework with a grade of B or higher
- Competitive score on the GRE or other graduate entrance examination
- Proficiency in medical terminology recommended
