Biography

In January 2016 Dr. Mary Cooper joined the faculty of the Jefferson College of Population Health (JCPH) at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA, where she is Associate Professor. Dr. Cooper also serves as Program Director of the Healthcare Quality & Safety (HQS) degree programs where she is responsible for all Capstone Projects in HQS, oversight of the HQS curriculum and education in Population Health Academies and certificate programs. She is also Program Director for the Operational Excellence program at JCPH and  the co-Lead for Health System Sciences in the redesign of the curriculum for Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University.  

In addition to her work at Thomas Jefferson University, Dr. Cooper is also Chief Quality Officer for the Connecticut Hospital Association, a position she has held since 2012. In 2014 the Connecticut Hospital Association was awarded the American Heart Association’s Dick Davidson Quality Milestone Award for Allied Association Leadership, the highest honor for quality in the association sphere. Dr. Cooper came to Connecticut from Rhode Island, where she was Senior Vice President and Chief Quality Officer for Lifespan Corporation, a four-hospital health system based in Providence. She was an Assistant Professor in Medicine (Research) at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and a member on the Rhode Island State Board of Medical Licensure and Discipline. She also served 12 years at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, where she served as Chief Quality Officer.

Dr. Cooper’s leadership experience has included a variety of positions in the quality arena beginning in 1990. She also practiced internal medicine for ten years prior to moving into administration. Her interests encompass health policy and shaping the quality agenda on a variety of topics including quality methodologies, patient safety and operational efficiencies.

Dr. Cooper’s achievements and honors include:

  • Grants and fellowships in outcomes research, patient safety, information technology, case management and cardiac medicine totaling over $8 million.
  • Publication of book chapters, abstracts and journal articles in such journals as Circulation, Pediatric Pulmonology, Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association, Academic Medicine and AORN Journal.
  • Presentations at numerous conferences and symposia.
