Gun Violence is About Children and Our Neighborhoods

Drew Harris, DPM, MPH, an assistant professor of Population Health and Health Policy at Thomas Jefferson University, provides a poignant overview of gun violence as a public health issue.

Touching everything from current events to the histories of trauma borne by individuals and their communities, the op ed goes beyond the usual easy answers to take a hard look at what leads people—often very young men—to pull the trigger. Harris finds a vacuum where hope, role models, and dreams for the future should be in many shooters’ lives and asks us to think of ways to return meaning and a sense of safety to the lives of our brothers and sons.
