Are Detox Teas Safe?
Detox teas have become a hot commodity, peddled by celebrities and raved about by family and friends on social media. Among the many benefits touted by companies are the removal of toxins from the body and dramatic weight loss.
But physicians like Dina Halegoua-DeMarzio, MD, a G.I. doctor and director of the Jefferson Fatty Liver Center, say that these claims are exaggerated and potentially risky. Since these products are not regulated by the FDA, their manufacturers aren’t required to substantiate any of their claims or pass any rigorous safety standards.
According to Halegoua-DeMarzio, while ingesting the teas could result in liver failure in extreme cases, she typically sees more mild side effects such as high blood pressure, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. For patients searching for weight loss solutions there is no magic bullet other than the careful eating and exercise that come with committing to a healthier lifestyle.
