Residency Training
Dr. Kairys instructing laparoscopic
techniques in the training lab

Jefferson's Department of Surgery provides first-rate training for residents pursuing careers in general surgery or surgical subspecialties. During the five-year program, residents receive education and clinical experience in the following surgical specialties:

  • Acute Care/Trauma
  • Breast
  • Cardiovascular
  • Colorectal
  • Endocrine
  • Gastrointestinal
  • Hepatobiliary
  • Oncologic
  • Pancreatic
  • Plastic
  • Pediatric
  • Surgical Critical Care
  • Thoracic
  • Vascular

There are also ample opportunities to participate in research.

At Jefferson, a defined two-year curriculum is in place to ensure that all topics are covered on a regular basis. During the course of residency training, residents are exposed to topics multiple times and at different levels, thus deepening their  understanding and appreciation of the material.

The Association of Program Directors in Surgery (APDS) sponsored textbook, The Physiologic Basis of Surgery, edited by J. Patrick O’Leary, is the recommended basic science text.

John L. Cameron's Current Surgical Therapy is the recommended clinical text. A copy of the text is supplied to each resident and is also available online as are a host of other clinical resources through the University library.
