Overcoming Paralysis with Technology and Philanthropy
On July 29, 2023, Patrick Hoey’s life took an unexpected turn when a diving accident left him paralyzed from the chest down. However, his indomitable spirit and the support he received at Jefferson Moss-Magee Rehabilitation Hospital – Center City paved the way for a remarkable recovery journey. The Buddy Marshall Assistive Technology Center quickly became one of Patrick’s favorite places. The suite includes a plethora of tools like Amazon Alexa for voice-controlled tasks, adaptive video games for a fun way to aid his physical therapy, and a 3D printer for creating tools such as a custom phone holder or bottle opener.
These technologies, which are solely funded through philanthropy, offered Patrick newfound independence and the ability to connect with the world, even in the face of physical limitations. Patrick and his family have since become wonderful advocates for our hospital, speaking at the Adam Taliaferro Foundation & Moss-Magee Golf Outing and Humanitarian Award Dinner about the impact philanthropy has had on their family after Patrick’s injury. He hopes to resume his education at Penn State University with online classes while he continues to improve physically and emotionally. Patrick has continued his rehabilitation journey at Jefferson Moss-Magee Rehabilitation – Riverfront, where he continues to reach new goals every day.
