How Jefferson's MossRehab Institute for Brain Health Helped a Veteran Get Back on Track

This image shows veteran Scott Edgell while he was in the United States Army.

Back in 1989 while serving in the United States Army, Scott Edgell suffered a concussion during a military training exercise in Fort Riley, Kansas, when a tanker hatch hit him in the back of the head. He recovered from the injury, but decades later the symptoms returned. On top of the dizziness, balance issues, and vision problems, Edgell dealt with anxiety and depression.

Jefferson's MossRehab Institute for Brain Health restored his life, Edgell told CBS3 Philadelphia recently.

"There is help," Edgell said. "There's hope, and there's happiness, and there are the three things I had none of when I walked in that door."

One of only six traumatic brain injury centers dedicated to veterans, active duty military, and first responders, MossRehab Institute for Brain Health offers an intense three-week program. Edgell received physical, cognitive, and art therapy, and he got a service dog named Lars. He's now back at the center helping others.

"I was broken and down and out when I walked in the door," Edgell added. "They gave me the ability to rebuild my life and get my life back."
