Celebrating Two Centuries of Research Excellence & Innovation

As Jefferson commemorates its bicentennial, it is important to acknowledge the institution's significant contributions to research and academia over the past two centuries.

For 200 years Jefferson’s faculty, students, and alumni have driven advancements across the research spectrum—from basic science discovery to practical application—in fields raging from surgical innovation to material sciences, from RNA biology to infectious disease. As we reflect on the institution's rich history, it is clear that research has been a cornerstone of Jefferson's success and will continue to be integral to its future growth and innovation.

Research at Jefferson has significantly expanded over the last fifteen years, thanks to the emphasis placed by Steven B. McMahon, PhD, the senior associate provost for programmatic science and chair of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, on the critical importance of resources to further grow Jefferson as a research powerhouse. Dr. McMahon states, "Our research enterprise has doubled over the past 15 years, but to grow Jefferson as a research powerhouse, we need to invest in resources that support faculty and facilities." He also highlights the need for additional space and the recruitment of high-profile investigators.

David Whellan, MD, the James C. Wilson Professor of Medicine and deputy provost for research, underscores the institution's focus on improving health outcomes and developing innovative treatments. He explains that from basic science to clinical trials to the development of novel treatments for a multitude of conditions, it all starts in the laboratory. Dr. McMahon also explains the significance of philanthropy in supporting pilot studies that have led to a better understanding of diseases and the development of effective medications and vaccines, including those for COVID-19.

Both Dr. McMahon and Dr. Whellan stress the vital role of philanthropy in advancing research at Jefferson and express their commitment to the institution's vision for continued growth.

The bicentennial celebration at Jefferson serves as a tribute to past accomplishments and an opportunity to chart a course for the future. With a strategic plan for continued expansion, Jefferson remains dedicated to its mission of enhancing lives and making meaningful contributions to the world. The support of the broader community, through philanthropy and other means, is crucial to ensure that this journey continues to thrive and benefit society at large.
