How SurvivorNet and Jefferson's Mobile Cancer Screening Van are Helping Philadelphians Learn About Prostate Cancer

SurvivorNet, a free information platform for all kinds of cancer, and Jefferson Health's Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center and Dietz & Watson Mobile Cancer Screening Unit are coming together to make it easier to learn about cancer and get tested.
Jefferson’s mobile cancer screening van is equipped with private changing rooms, an exam area, screening equipment, and blood tests to bring underserved neighborhoods no-cost cancer tests. The donor-funded program reduces barriers to early detection and brings vital preventive care directly to those who might otherwise lack access.
"Early detection of prostate cancer is very important," Jefferson Health's Dr. Leonard Gomella told CBS3 Philadelphia at a recent event. "SurvivorNet is one of the avenues that men can learn about prostate cancer and all the new treatments that are out there for advanced disease."
He continued, "Men don't know they have it, and that's why screening is good. Our treatments for both local cancer and advanced prostate cancer are dramatically improved over the last 10 years."
Prostate cancer screening is especially important for Black men, who have higher rates of prostate cancer, Gomella said.
Hall of Fame NFL running back Emmitt Smith will be hosting a series of short documentaries on prostate cancer for SurvivorNet.
