Each outing includes two tickets, one for a former SCI patient and one for a caregiver or friend — allowing participants to attend on their own terms. These are not therapist-led outings. They are simple gestures of connection and support, encouraging people to step back into public life and explore the independence that they truly do still have. For many, it's a rare chance to enjoy a night out beyond the routine of medical appointments.
The feedback from participants speaks volumes about the value of the program. “If it wasn’t for this group, I would have no other reason to leave my house except for therapy or a doctor’s appointment,” says Zayaire Smith, reflecting on the friendships and confidence he’s gained through the group. “This group has given me a new sense of what I can do, and it has been so eye-opening meeting others in a similar situation to mine, and feeling a sense of community.”
Thanks to the continued generosity of donors, the SCI Activity Group is able to offer these experiences to many more participants. It’s a simple but effective way to support recovery — not just physically, but socially and emotionally — by helping individuals get back to doing the things they enjoy, alongside others who understand their journey.
