The Institute of Emerging Health Professions (IEHP) and the Enterprise Office of Diversity, Inclusion & Community Engagement at Thomas Jefferson University have collaborated to offer a unique educational opportunity for healthcare faculty, staff and clinicians charged with managing diversity initiatives in their organizations. Healthcare Diversity Leadership

The Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Diversity Leadership offers a dynamic educational experience for those charged with managing or leading diversity initiatives. Interested learners will come from healthcare systems and medical centers, healthcare payors, partner organizations such as medical staffing and supply providers, pharmaceutical companies, community and government organizations that collaborate with healthcare organizations, and consulting/legal groups in the healthcare space.  These students will be prepared to institute change within their organizations and effectively lead that change productively.

This program will be offered online with three weekend sessions on-campus in the city of Philadelphia.

A final project will be required to complete the program. Students must develop a project that applies theory to community contexts and teach and coach organizations, municipalities and groups to engage their communities meaningfully.

Students will select from the following concentrations:

  1. Administrators - Health care related administrator interested in creating culturally competent practice surrounding patients, colleagues, and employees.
  2. Providers - For health care providers interested in guidelines on culturally competent clinical encounters and using the measured experience data.
  3. Diversity Practitioners - For health care organization diversity practitioners focusing on community and internal communications and change implementation
  4. Community- For any community members with a focus on caregiving, health plan and health financial literacy
  5. Faculty - For faculty members interested in cultural sensitivity and diversity-curriculum integration.

Dr. Metzler

Program Director, Christopher Metzler, PhD is a global thought leader, professor, political analyst, TV personality and the non-Executive Chairman of a global health care enterprise. A serial Entrepreneur in the medical and Management Consulting fields, he is The CEO of Gordium HealthCare, City Place Pharmacy, Next Generation Labs, JMI Consulting, Medicine on Wheels, 911 Urgent Care, FHWFIT and others.

He is an on-air TV and digital personality best known for going beyond the talking points with in-depth reasoning and analysis during his appearances on CNN, ABC, MSNBC, Fox News, Al Jazeera, News One, NewsMAX, CNBC, OAN, WHDT TV, BBC and others.

Educated at The University of Oxford in Oxford England and Columbia University, Dr. Metzler was on the faculty at both Cornell and Georgetown Universities. At Georgetown he was also the Senior Associate Dean of Applied Management Degrees He is currently a Senior Fellow at Thomas Jefferson University, home of The Sidney Kimmel College of Medicine Institute of Emerging Health Professions where he focuses on diversity and healthcare.

Joseph B. Hill

Joseph B. Hill is Senior Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer for Thomas Jefferson University and Jefferson Health System in Philadelphia, Pa.  In this role, he is responsible for leading the integration of diversity, inclusion and health equity to ensure excellence in education, research and patient care.

Prior to joining Thomas Jefferson University and Jefferson Health System in 2015, Joseph served as Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer for Froedtert and the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee where he developed a diversity and inclusion program that became an integral part of the health system’s values, strategy and operational initiatives. Under his leadership, Froedtert’s diversity and inclusion team was nationally recognized for supplier diversity and health care equality.

From 2007 to 2010, Joseph was the Managing Director of Diversity and Inclusion for the American Cancer Society’s national home office in Atlanta, Ga., where he provided strategic direction, management and support for diversity and inclusion initiatives. He was also the American Cancer Society’s National Director of Diversity and External partnerships with responsibility for working with all 17 divisions on diversity and inclusion strategies. In addition, he served as the senior leader in the development and implementation of business relationships with key diverse community organizations and leaders. Prior to the American Cancer Society, Joseph applied his skills at the corporate headquarters of Cingular Wireless, which became AT&T Mobility, where he served as Senior Diversity Manager.

Joseph earned a B.A. from Virginia Union University, an M.A. from Howard University and a Certificate in Diversity Management in Health Care (CDM) from Georgetown University and the Institute for Diversity in Health Management.

A native of Buffalo, N.Y., Joseph is a frequent speaker at national forums where he shares his insights and experience on the importance of diversity and strategic partnerships in both the for-profit and nonprofit sectors. Joseph serves as a board member for Garden and Associates, LLC,  National Football Players Father’s Association and is on the Advisory Board for Usher’s New Look Foundation.

Rosa M. Colon-Kolacko, PhD, MBA, CDM

Rosa M. Colon-Kolacko, PhD, MBA, CDM is the former NYC Health + Hospitals, Senior Vice President and Chief People Officer.  The NYC Health + Hospitals is the largest integrated municipal healthcare delivery system in the country. Dr. Colon-Kolacko is the President and CEO of Global Learning and Diversity Partners, LLC, a consulting practice that designs and implements human capital and diversity strategies to build inclusive and learning organizations. She is also the co-founder of Health Innovation Globally, LLC. a business consulting firm that brings to market innovative international culturally competent telemedicine products to improve healthcare access and foster health equity.  Rosa has over 20 years’ experience in Global Pharmaceuticals, Health Systems, Academia, Government and Non-Profit Boards. For most of the past decade, she served Christiana Care Health System in Delaware, as Senior Vice President of its Learning Institute and Chief Diversity Officer. Earlier in her career she worked at Bristol Myers-Squibb and, SmithKline Beecham (since renamed GlaxoSmithKline), leading change, cultural transformation, learning and talent management functions in Asia, Europe, and North America, including Puerto Rico.

Rosa is very involved in many national and state level boards and commissions:  Board member of the (ACHE) National Association of Latino Healthcare Executives, and DE AARP Executive Council, Chair of the DE Hispanic Commission Health & Social Services Committee and serves also on the American Leadership Council of the Institute for Diversity and Health Equity and Past Chair of the Board of the Latin American Community Center (LACC).

She received her Ph.D. in Organizational Development and Change from Benedictine University, an MBA from Henley Business School, University of Reading England, a post-graduate Marketing Diploma from the Chartered Institute of Marketing, London, and a Certificate in Diversity Management (CDM) from Georgetown University and the AHA Institute for Diversity and Health Equity.  She is a researcher and has held Academic positions as Professor of Professional Practice at Bowling Green State University, adjunct faculty at Georgetown University, University of Delaware and most recent appointment at Jefferson, University of Philadelphia.

Gloria Goins

Gloria Goins is the Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer for Bon Secours Health System, the nation’s 25 largest healthcare system. In this role, Gloria is responsible for leveraging diversity, inclusion and cross cultural competency to advance the organization’s mission and business objectives. For the past three years, DiversityInc has recognized Bon Secours as one of the top healthcare systems for diversity and inclusion. Becker’s Hospital Review recognized Gloria herself as one of the fifteen chief diversity officers in healthcare to know.

In addition to leading the diversity and inclusion organization at Bon Secours, Gloria leads the organization’s employee engagement strategy. Under her leadership, Bon Secours achieved the highest employee engagement score in the organization’s history (the 99th percentile), and has been recognized by the Gallup Organization as one of the Top Best Workplaces in the world for the past seven years.

Gloria comes to Bon Secours most recently from Prudential Financial where she served as vice president of business diversity outreach. In that role, Gloria led the company’s efforts to drive sales, recruiting and branding in diverse and multicultural market segments. While at Prudential, she managed a portfolio of 60 non-profit organizations to create strategic business and recruiting relationships.

In addition, Gloria served as the chief diversity officer at The Home Depot where she was as a senior member of operations team with accountability for all aspects of employee, customer, multicultural marketing, and community strategies for emerging markets.

Gloria served as the very first vice president of diversity for Cingular Wireless, which at the time was the nation’s largest wireless communications company with more than 70,000 employees. Under her leadership, Cingular’s diversity organization received national recognition from Diversity Best Practices, Next Step magazine, and the Disability Rights Advocates.

Gloria is a former Human Resources faculty member at Georgetown University, where she served as the founder and chair of the Board for the Georgetown Chief Diversity Officers’ Roundtable. She earned a Master of Business Administration from Mercer University, a Juris Doctorate from the University Of Pennsylvania School Of Law, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Stanford University.

Bernard Lopez, MD

Bernard Lopez, MD is a native Philadelphian.  He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1982 and graduated from the Sidney Kimmel Medical College in 1986 with his MD degree.  He completed a residency training program in Emergency Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in 1989 and is currently a practicing emergency physician where he serves as the executive vice chair in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College.   

He has served as the Associate Dean for Diversity and Community Engagement, Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University since 2013, providing oversight and guidance covering faculty, graduate medical education, and medical students. In January 2017, he added the title of Associate Provost for Diversity and Inclusion, Thomas Jefferson University, providing oversight and guidance covering all of the colleges and East Falls Campus.  In addition to his work at Jefferson, Dr Lopez has served as president for the Academy for Diversity and Inclusion in Emergency Medicine (2015-2017) and completed the Health Executive Diversity and Inclusion Certificate program from the American Association of Medical Colleges in 2014.

Pierre Vigilance, MD, MPH

Pierre Vigilance, MD, MPH  is a strategic advisor and connector who weaves health into civic innovation, social impact, and population health education opportunities, Dr. Pierre Vigilance has held senior executive positions in the non-profit, government, academic, and private sectors, and has developed broad experience in public health leadership, management, program design and policy development.

As the Associate Dean for Public Health Practice and Associate Professor of Health Policy & Management, Dr. Vigilance has been a member of the executive leadership team at the Milken Institute School of Public Health at The George Washington University in Washington, D.C. since 2011. He teaches and advises students and executive learners in his leadership and social impact design courses; oversees the school’s applied learning platform, and co-directs their Diversity and Inclusion task force.  He also maintains a consulting practice that engages in human centered design and professional development, and assists municipalities as they consider “smart” growth opportunities.

He received his medical degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, a Masters in Public Health from the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD, and his undergraduate degree from The George Washington University, in Washington, D.C.

Ildemaro Gonzalez

Ildemaro Gonzalez is an Inclusion and Diversity executive with a successful track record designing and implementing innovative corporate Inclusion & Diversity strategies and other Talent Management initiatives in both a domestic and global context. These efforts have impacted all aspects of the operation including patients’, customers’, and employees’ experiences.

As the Chief Diversity Officer at Parkland Health and Hospital System in Dallas, Texas, the Global Director of Inclusion and Philanthropy at Newell Rubbermaid and Managing Director, Diversity Strategy at the American Cancer Society- National Home Office, Ildemaro has galvanized executives and Board members around a vision and established effective partnerships with operational leaders for long term adoption and sustainability of new initiatives. He also consults organizations in strategic planning and helps them leverage Inclusion and Diversity strategies to advance business outcomes.

He received his MBA from the J. Mack Robinson School of Business at Georgia State University and his Bachelor of Business Administration from the Universidad Catolica Andres Bello, in Caracas, Venezuela.

Pamela D. Reed, PhD

Pamela D. Reed, PhD is a tenured Associate Professor of English Composition and Africana Literature at Virginia State University with over 25 years of teaching experience. She earned the Ph.D. in African American Studies from Temple University with emphasis on Cultural Aesthetics. As such, she is an expert on Black life and culture.

Reed also holds the Masters of Arts in Communications, with a concentration in Public Relations from the former Northeast Louisiana University, now the University of Louisiana at Monroe. She began her Communications specialization at California State University, Hayward (now Cal State, East Bay). There she earned a Bachelors of Arts in Mass Communications, with an Advertising Option.

Dr. Reed is a diversity consultant and trainer who has, for over 10 years, provided her expertise to a variety of corporate, governmental, and educational entities, both in the private and public sectors. Additionally, Dr. Reed has been certified as an online instructor by the Online Learning Consortium, where her studies focused on course design, online accessibility, and building online learning communities. This pedagogical proficiency has allowed her to develop multiple courses and practice innovative and forward-looking approaches to online education.

A widely published author and cultural critic, Reed’s writings have appeared in/on Diverse: Issues in Higher Education, the, and other national publications. She is a contributor to both the Encyclopedia of Black Studies and the Encyclopedia of African Religions. Professor Reed is also an accomplished editor, having served as Guest Editor for a special issue of the Journal of Black Studies, “Barack Obama’s Improbable Election and the Question of Race and Racism in Contemporary America.”
